Does your house feel more like a cave at times? Are you tired of seeing those outdated light fixtures? Is the indoor lighting insufficient for you to clearly read a book at night?

If you answered ‘yes’ to any of these questions, it’s time to rethink the lighting scheme in your house.

You shouldn't have to suffer in the dark!

Take note of these lighting ideas for home décor that will not only help you brighten up a dim room but also make your house a much livelier place to live in.

Start with White

This is a no-brainer. Everyone knows that the color white reflects the most light. So, in order to maximize the available light, try to use as much white in your home décor as you possibly can.

The best idea is to whitewash the walls but if that makes the interiors too boring for you, try to keep the ceiling white at least.

You can also incorporate this color or should we rather say minimize the use of other colors, in various ways throughout the house. Go for white curtains, white bed sheets or any other pallid furniture items to scatter the maximum amount of both, natural and artificial light.

Go for Neutral Tones

If white is not your color, then going for neutral tones is your best bet to make the most of indoor lighting without compromising on the beauty of the place.

Muted beige and ivory tones or sky blue hues are a good choice to consider. Not only do they avoid the sharp and crisp look from the use of too much white but also make the room look more open and illuminated.

Add a Bit of Black

It might seem counterintuitive since the color black is known to absorb light, but adding a few black shades around the house can actually make it appear brighter.

Introduce the color in small but prominent bursts. For example, black photo frames on a white wall, black cushions, and a black-colored headboard are bound to make the surrounding areas pop. Or how about a large black and white floor mat?

For a more subtle dose of darkness, you can place a sleek and slender black floor lamp in the room. Regardless of which style you go for, the key is to not overuse the charcoal shades as that will lead to the exact opposite of what you are trying to achieve.

Pro tip: If you don’t like black, navy blue or deep chestnut brown will do equally well.

Accent Lighting All the Way

Of course, no room would be bright enough without the use of accent lighting.

Depending on where they are installed, accent lights can accentuate your room décor and furniture, facilitate you in certain activities such as reading and cooking, or simply increase the overall ambience indoors.

Bedside lamps are a must. Alternately, you can opt for a fancy chandelier or for a more modern touch, shop for chic pendant lights that come in all sorts of eccentric as well as geometric styles.
